For the moment, I’m taking my walks at 2:30 pm, while my son sleeps and my husband works. Today, the temperature at this time of day was 18 degrees F, with a strong wind out of the west, and a moderate snowfall. But do you think I let that stop me? I did not! Walking in a snowstorm is its own kind of reward, really, especially after you lose all feeling in your extremities. After that, it hardly feels cold at all. Everything is so quiet under the falling snow, except for the crunch of steps (I know – that observation is not unique). And then, I don’t have to cross another human soul, which is quite how I prefer my walks.
I did have to veer from my usual path though, which is on the outside edge of town. I walked through the middle of town, and decided I would stop at the church to see the Mass schedule for today. It’s the Feast of Mary, Mother of God – a Holy Day of obligation. Alas, the church was locked and the Mass had already been held at 10 am. I missed it! Mortal sin! Normally, I am better informed of these things, but I’ve missed Mass the last 2 weekends because of the Holidays and my mother in-law’s visit. Mortal sin – again! Triple Mortal Sin! Refer to me as Jessica, the Damned.
Speaking of the damned, I think my son (Son?) might be a Messianic pretender. He’s been referring to himself lately as the baby Jesus. He will say things like “Baby Jesus read a book!” and then bring me a book to read to him. And sometimes, I will take him up and hold him tight in my arms, and he will say “Baby Jesus. Mama Mary.” Then, after a moment, he will add “Papa Joseph.” Alarming, in the most endearing way.
