We're en route for Belle-Ile, taking the long way, up through Normandie and down through Bretagne. Monday we stayed near Caen, and visited the city a bit.
Tuesday we visited the beaches in Normandy, the site of the D-Day invasions and the American Cemetery. I've never been a fan of Normandy. So much of it was destroyed during WWII that it lacks the old world charm of more southernly points in France. I've come to appreciate it though, as we traveled through the beaches, and witnessed the sites of battles and the destruction of the bombs. My grandfather fought in Normandy. Visiting the sites, the history comes to life - the fear, the horror, and the senseless loss of thousands of lives. Normandy is not necessarily a fun destination, but it is a meaningful one.
Today we visited the Mont Saint-Michel, which I can only describe as a tourist bordel. Like all mythical cities on a hill, it is best admired from afar. The beauty is in the quest - arrive, and you are bound for disappointment. Mais bon, I'm glad I saw it. It's worth a visit.
This afternoon, Loulou has been sick, which wasn't very conducive to visiting St. Malo. He cried nearly the whole time about his burning, watery eyes, so we really couldn't see much. I did enjoy what little I saw, though.
Tomorrow, depending on the health of the child, we hope to visit the town of Dinan, before catching the boat to Belle-Ile. There, we'll be staying for a while. Vive les vacances!
