Out on the Town

In the beginning, we could not leave our home. The new Baby held us hostage with his dirty diapers, his unprovoked screaming, and his immature thermal regulation (it was the dead of winter). I remember our first appointment with the pediatrician, two weeks after he was born. I began preparing hours in advance. I made a checklist of everything we may need for the 20 minute trip – from diapers to onesies, pacifiers to blankets. I think I may have even prepared some bottles, packed carefully in ice to prevent bacterial contamination. What if he decided to be hungry?

Stop laughing.

Thankfully, those days are over. Nowadays he’s very portable. Picnics and parks, restaurants and rodeos, he’s done them all these past few weeks. Now we travel light (diapers and wipes), and we no longer worry about arbitrary fits of screaming. He enjoys the social scene, though not the act of socializing. If as a stranger you try to talk to him, beware. Your ears may spout blood (I sense a career as a Frenchman in his future – he’ll enjoy sitting in a crowded bar and snubbing everyone). Above all, I realize, he enjoys taking part in a world that is unpredictable, and full of movement. I watch his eyes, trying to make sense of it all. And I realize I am so lucky.
