A Day in the life of Loulou

(or Look at my baby! Look at him!)

6:30am – Rise and Shine! Mother has taken the habit of escaping to guestroom, leaving more-difficult-to-wake-up father to listen to pterodactyl-like screeching for the next hour. Think of it as your alarm clock, honey! (note to childless friends: you will never sleep late again.)

8am - Breakfast #1.

8:30am – Walk around the neighborhood. Mother suspiciously eyes all passers-by. Who wouldn’t want to steal The Cutest Baby in the World, after all?

LouLouBath.jpg9am – Bath, involving much comical splashing and chewing on Mr. Duckie (No I did not strategically place that washcloth there! He’s modest!).

10am - Breakfast #2.

12pm - Lunch #1.

1pm – Play with neglect-o-matics, err, intellectually stimulating battery-powered toys.

2pm - Lunch #2 – Solid Food! (or as LouLou likes to think of it- Body paint!)

LouLouNap.jpg2:30-4pm - Sweet, sweet sleep. Mother is also exhausted, but baby will only sleep in arms. Mother sleeps also, in the rocking chair, with her body contorted in an unnatural position. Mother later wonders why her neck hurts.

4pm – Lunch #3 (note: Babies with this eating pattern are known as “snackers.” Snackers are statistically more likely to drive their parents insane.)

LouLouDaddy.jpg5:30pm - Father returns home. Quickly finds himself bombarded with baby. Mother exits scene with a bottle of wine and a sleazy romance novel. Father’s attempts to read the newspaper are thwarted by paper-eating baby.

7pm – Dinner time and off to sleepyland.

7pm – 6:30am - Wake every 2-6 hours, according to mood (note to childless friends: you will never sleep again. Period.).

Genetics

According to this study, researchers have found that most children tend to be emotionally closer to their maternal grandparents. The likely rationale (albeit sub-conscious):

"A maternal grandmother knows with certainty that her genetic material has passed to her grandchildren through her daughter but a paternal grandfather has double uncertainty -- he has no certainty that either his son or his grandchildren bear his genetic material."

But I ask you, people, in this case, can there really be any doubt?

Goodbye Gummy Grin and Other Milestones

Our baby has officially become a danger to himself and others. Firstly, his two bottom front teeth are pushing through. Though they are only now barely visible, I cringe to think that soon his teeth may leave marks on my tender flesh. A toothy smile is over-rated, my friends.

Nous Trois

He has also learned that he can roll over - both ways. Herein lays perhaps the biggest danger – no more leaving him unattended on the changing table, no more leaving him on the guest bed as I go about the housework. No, now we are extra vigilant. But even the floor has proven unsafe, as just yesterday Charlie, lying on his side facing Loulou, lightly pawed his baby face. The resulting screams were exaggerated, but even knowing this does little to ease my guilty mother conscience.

But by far the worst part of his new mobility has been that his favorite time to practice is at 6:30 am, rolling back and forth between his father and me as we desperately cling to slumber. And one can only sleep through so much of baby rolling into you, pulling lips and hair, and laughing hysterically (and so very loudly). Which is why I’m now up at 7, typing this. I’ve heard it only gets worse, that some children are prone to middle of the night wakings when they are learning to walk, wanting to practice their new skills. Perhaps then you will find me writing posts in the wee hours of the morning, as baby toddles around, wreaking general havoc on the house.

Time-Tracker - A Personal Time Management Solution

Time-Tracker is another personal project of mine. It is a very simple application that helps you keep track of the time you spend on any given task. It’s like having a timer at hand that you can start and stop in a couple of clicks (literally).

Time-Tracker relies extensively on Ajax technologies (DOM Scripting, XmlHttpRequest and client-side XML/XSLT).

You can learn more about it here: Introducing Time Tracker.
