Sign, sign, everywhere a sign…

by Jessica on January 16th, 2006

If you didn’t think I was hippie enough after reading my last post, where I contemplated home schooling, prepare to be thoroughly convinced. I’ve rented a DVD on teaching Baby sign language. Last night we dimmed the lights, popped some corn, and took in the 20 minute tutorial about why sign language is so beneficial to the non-verbal set. The rest of the video ran like a Baby Einstein – ridiculous babyfied music, images of toys repeated ad infinitum, and a creepy woman with a murderous-looking permanent smile demonstrating basic American Sign Language.
Crazy lady aside, I really like the concept. The premise is that Babies are able to imitate gestures long before they can speak. I can vouch for the truth of this – Lou can imitate me in games of Peek-a-Boo, Pat-a-Cake, and other forms of play. But he can’t say a single word yet, not even “mama.” If Lou is anything like his father was as a baby, he’ll probably even lag behind in speech development.
Learning Sign Language is said to increase Baby’s IQ and reduce frustration from inability to communicate basic wants and needs. Almost counter-intuitively, babies who sign are shown to speak sooner. But what interests me most is the potential for more communication with our son. Wow, to know what’s happening in that Baby brain. Now that’s exciting.
We’ve decided to start with a few basic signs, including:
Mama
Dada
Kitty
Dog
All Done
More
I’ll keep you updated on the progress. I expect it will take at least a month before he begins to imitate. And if he ever starts signing thing like “buy me that!” or “take me to McDonalds!,” be assured this experiment will come to an abrupt halt.

Oh, and check out this report from ABC (watch the video clips), if you think my public school rant in my last post was over the top.

  1. Trop fort, j’ai décidé la même chose ! Mais en langue des signes française, tant qu’à faire. Mais j’ai moi-même du mal à apprendre des signes, alors c’est pas gagné…

Signing has definite advantages. Please “beware” from the voice of experience, your sister imitated her father with a hand gesture that she witnessed, while he was driving down the road suffering from a case of dreaded Road Rage…..need I say more?
It took weeks to get her to stop.
    Love,
    Mom

  3. Va jeter un oeil ici : http://www.wmaker.net/maisonenfant/
et demande-leur le n°3 de leur magazine : il contient des articles très intéressants sur la scolarisation et la déscolarisation, ainsi que sur la langue des signes ;-)

  4. oooh…. an underground hippie parenting movement in France. Surprising… I’ve always heard school is OBLIGATOIRE, if nothing else.
